Promesse Ring
An 18k French Fede, faith, or “Promesse” ring circa 1900. This ring was used as an early form of the engagement ring when diamonds weren’t yet accessible to general society. The motif of two hands holding either one another or a heart was popular across Europe (ex: fede, gimmel, claddagh) but this design is specific to the Vendee region of France. An old French horse head stamp is visible on the outside of the shank. Size US 4.
The Victorian era is the period of Queen Victoria’s reign, from her accession in 1837 until her death in 1901. Victorian jewelry trends were directly influenced by the Queen’s personal collection which included many sentimental pieces honoring her family and her beloved husband Prince Albert. She ruled for over 60 years and this time can be separated into three distinct stages: The Romantic Period, The Grand Period, and the Aesthetic Period.
